Hi to all,

I am thinking of signing up for the full distance in sept.Metaman bintan.
I ve did a half ironman, few ods, and sprints. What I fear most is the cycling part.
Thinking of doing the bintan od , just to try out the terrain first before committing to the full distance, but my work schedule doesn't allow that.
In Singapore I mostly do coastal/selarang loops. Not sure if it is enough training since generally it is still quite flat compare to bintan's rolling hills.
Every ride, I will try to clock 60or 70 km. I cycle at most once a week. What kind of mileage should I aim to clock every ride ?
My aim is just to finish

I'm sure many ironman guys in the forum will give you good advice. Just a few points for you, when time is limited due to work and family stuff. Covering distance I trainIng of. Ause important but when it comes to long distance, I'd make sure I can feel comfortable wih sitting aero position over 5,6 hrs long. Or at least you can sit on saddle that long. It's no OD or Half IM. Bike fitting( saddle height, angle forward rear position, aerobar height, angle, arm rest position and height etc), right shape of saddle, correct pedaling are key elements. If you ever had saddle sore, pimples etc in shorter distance, you need to find PU why that happened to eliminate for long course.

And choosing this race as your 1st IM distance? Well it's close from SG and easier to arrange things. But heads up, bike course and run course will cover tons of hills, as long as in Bintan. Not friendly terrain for 1st timer Id imagine. Nothing is impossible. Just finishing the race probably depends on your determination and mental strength. Good luck on your challenge.

Congratulations on your first step of making the decision to do your first Iron Distance race. As the full Iron distance race is challenging, you will need a programme to get you there. There are many programmes you can follow as well as coaches you can approach to help you get to your goal of finishing a race. You would need to do strength endurace training and that can be done even at Coastal Road. You would probably need to get more milage done... that means swimming, cycling and running more often. For me, have it 3 x a week for each of the disciplines and I also put in brick session like bike and run sessions too.

You will also have to look into periodization as well as your recovery and slowly build your training to fit the race distance.

Hi Drumman

'Just To finish ' an IM race with a cut-off time of 17 hours, I do not see anyone has any problem, Just 'Keep Moving' without stopping during the race.

Besides what Tomoya & Chris recommendations , U may want to consider to join the following Sub groups to train for it;

The 'Sub Group' are ;
-------------------------------------------

1..'MondayTriSwim' Group at Buona Vista Swimming pool (Richard Leong, Dion ,Lloyds & the group),

2...Tuesday night 'ENR' Cycling Group at Changi Coastal Road (Edkor , Tea4Two , Reeves & the group),

3...Sat morning ' Sentosa Swim/Run Group' (Tesky Matthew , Jolene & the group)

4...Sunday 'Easten Ride Group ' + Run at East Coast F2 Car park (IMIM, Tesky, Edkor, Reeves & the group)

5...Sunday ' Desaru Super Series Group DSSG' ( IMIM & the group)

6...'TeamBandung' Monday night practise swim group( not coaching) at Geyland East swimming pool (Mummy_tiger Kathleen)

There is a will , there is a way  :)

I have signed up for the Metaman half Ironman as I do not have as much time to train for the full Ironman due to work and family. Would love to cycle in Bintan in the coming June Holidays and even bring my family up. All the best for your quest in the IM Bintan.
